Web Design for Detroit Small Businesses
For Detroit auto shops, restaurants, clinics and contractors whose customers are far more likely than most to reach them on a phone only.
A check-engine light comes on during the morning commute. The driver searches on a phone with two bars of data, and your site is still loading a slideshow.
This isn't a customer problem. It's a site built for a fast desktop connection in a city where a lot of people browse on cellular data only.
What we would do first for a Detroit business: load your site on a mid-range phone over a throttled cellular connection and time how long it takes to see your phone number and hours. Then check that your Google Business Profile says the same thing.
What Detroit customers search for
Detroit is a city of 649,095 people in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, up from 639,534 at the April 2020 base. Local searches here lean practical and urgent: "brake repair near me", "tire shop open Sunday", "furnace repair Detroit". The searcher wants a price range, a time, and a number to tap.
14.1% of residents aged 5 and over speak a language other than English at home, including 8.0% who speak Spanish, per the Census American Community Survey 2024.
Which Detroit businesses most need a better website
The Census County Business Patterns 2023 cover Wayne County, which includes Detroit and many suburbs, so read these as the regional picture. They count 33,699 establishments, 84.3% with fewer than 20 employees:
- Restaurants and bars: 3,509.
- Outpatient health care: 2,904, including 584 dental offices.
- Specialty trade contractors: 1,391.
- Repair and maintenance: 1,380, mostly auto repair.
- Personal and laundry services: 1,069.
The repair count stands out. In King County, Washington, with twice as many establishments overall, there are 1,236 repair businesses. Detroit-area repair shops compete with each other on the phone screen, and the one that answers the customer's questions there gets the car.
Mobile and speed
This is the section that matters most in Detroit. The Census survey on computer and internet use finds 90.1% of Detroit households have broadband of any type, but 17.7% have a smartphone and no other computer, and 19.6% rely only on a cellular data plan. That is roughly one household in five whose whole internet is a phone.
Google's Core Web Vitals set 2.5 seconds for the main content to appear and 200 milliseconds for a response to a tap, measured on the slower 75% of real visits. On cellular data, a WordPress site with a slider, a chat widget and five tracking scripts rarely makes it. We hand-code pages, drop what does not earn its weight, and put the phone number in the first screen.
ADA website accessibility
The Department of Justice's Guidance on Web Accessibility and the ADA, March 18, 2022, says Title III covers businesses open to the public and names WCAG as helpful technical guidance. The barriers it lists include poor color contrast, missing alt text, videos without captions, unlabeled forms and mouse-only navigation. For a repair shop, the usual culprits are a price list in an image and a quote form a screen reader cannot fill in.
Local SEO with a Google Business Profile
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. For a shop, choose the most specific category, list your real services, post photos of your bays and team, and answer reviews. Then make your website repeat the same services and hours.
Help from the city
The City of Detroit and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation run Motor City Match, with tracks called Plan, Develop, Design, Cash and Restore that include design services and gap funding. As of round 24 in October 2023, it had served 1,936 businesses and awarded $15.7 million in cash grants. If you are opening or moving a storefront, check whether the current round fits you.
Today → After, for a Detroit auto repair shop
| Today | After |
|---|---|
| Home page slideshow takes seconds to load on data | Phone number and hours in the first screen |
| Prices only by phone | Your diagnostic fee and typical price ranges in text |
| Contact form asks for VIN and mileage first | Name, phone, car, problem |
| Google hours missing Saturday | Same hours on site and profile |
An illustration with our assumptions: 250 visits a month and 4 in 100 call, which is 10 calls. If a fast mobile page moves that to 6 in 100, it's 15. If you book 60% and the average repair is $350, five extra calls is about $1,050 a month.
When it's not worth it yet
If you have a two-week backlog, don't pay for more calls. Fix the Google profile hours and come back when you want to fill the slow season.
What it costs
Our custom web design is $2,660 once plus $17.50 a month hosting, or $122.50 a month with hosting and unlimited edits. Starting out, the under-$99 two-page site or the free website offer may be the better first step.
We work remotely with Detroit businesses and have no office there. Book a free 30-minute call and we will tell you which fix to make first.
