Websites, Google Ads and Automation for Fitness Studios and Gyms
For independent gyms, boutique studios and personal training businesses that get trial sign-ups and then lose half of them before the second visit.
Twelve people booked a free trial class last month.
Five came. Two joined. Nobody called the other seven.
That is not a coaching problem, and it is not that people are flaky. It is a follow-up problem: the booking system records the no-show, and nobody's job is to act on it.
What we would do first
We would pull the last 90 days of trial sign-ups from your booking software and count how many reached a second visit and a first payment. Then we build the follow-up for the biggest drop, which is usually between sign-up and first class.
Rules for selling memberships
Membership sales carry state rules, and they shape your sign-up flow and website.
In Texas, Occupations Code section 702.101 says a person may not operate a health spa or sell memberships in one without a health spa operator's certificate of registration. Section 702.301 requires the contract to include the certificate of registration number, and section 702.304 requires a notice that the member may cancel by midnight of the third business day after signing. The chapter defines a health spa broadly as a business selling memberships for a physical exercise program, with exceptions such as tax-exempt organizations and member-owned clubs.
What that means for automation: an online sign-up must show the required notice, and a cancellation that arrives inside the window must be refunded, not argued with. We build the refund step into the flow. If you are outside Texas, we check your state's rules before building.
For text reminders and promotions, TCPA consent rules apply. The consent checkbox goes on the trial form.
Your website
- Class schedule that updates from your booking software, not a screenshot.
- One clear intro offer with online booking, above the fold on mobile.
- Coach bios with certifications, and photos of your real space and members, with permission.
- A plain pricing page. If you prefer not to publish full prices, a starting price still helps people decide.
- Your registration number and contract terms available before checkout if your state requires them.
Google Ads: buy trials, measure members
The LocaliQ 2026 search advertising benchmarks put Health and Fitness at $6.17 per click, a 5.81% click-through rate, a 6.94% conversion rate and $67.36 per lead. That is above the all-industry average cost per click of $5.42.
An illustration of budget to members, built on the averages plus two assumptions:
| Step | Illustration |
|---|---|
| Monthly ad spend | $1,000 |
| Trial sign-ups at $67.36 | about 15 |
| Assumed share that attends a first class | 1 in 2 |
| Assumed share of attendees who join | 1 in 2 |
| New members | about 4 |
Improve the first-class show rate from one in two to two in three, and the same spend gives about 5 members. That is why the follow-up comes before a bigger budget. Management is $300 a month flat, spend goes to Google directly, and the account stays in your name. See Google Ads management.
Five automations for how a studio runs
- Trial follow-up. A booked trial gets a confirmation, a what-to-bring message and a reminder; a no-show gets a friendly reschedule link the same day.
- First-month check-ins. New members get a message from their coach at week one and week four, and staff see who has not visited in ten days.
- Failed payment recovery. A declined card triggers an update-your-card message and a staff alert after two tries, instead of a surprise at month end.
- Cancellation window handling. A cancellation inside the state window is refunded and logged automatically; outside it, the request goes to a person with the member's history.
- Waitlist fills. When someone drops a full class, the next person on the waitlist gets the spot and a confirmation.

Hours and dollars
An illustration: 1 front-desk manager × 60 minutes a day on trial calls, payment chasing and waitlist shuffles × 300 days × $20 an hour ≈ $6,000 a year. The bigger number is members: if follow-up turns one extra trial a month into a member paying $120 a month, that is about $1,440 a year for each of them.
| Today | After |
|---|---|
| No-shows are not followed up | Reschedule link goes out the same day |
| Failed payments found at month end | Member is asked to update the card at once |
| New members drift away quietly | Check-ins at week one and week four |
| Cancellation window handled by memory | Refunds inside the window are automatic |
Honest limits
If you run fewer than 10 trials a month, start with the follow-up and your Google Business Profile before paying $6 a click. And if your booking software already has good automations, we configure those rather than rebuild them.
You own the site, the ad account and the workflows. We work remotely with studios, including in Dallas and Houston.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost for a gym?
The LocaliQ 2026 search benchmarks put Health and Fitness at an average of $6.17 per click, a 6.94% conversion rate and $67.36 per lead. What matters is your cost per paying member, so track trials all the way to the first payment.
Does a gym in Texas need to register with the state?
Generally yes. Texas Occupations Code section 702.101 says a person may not operate a health spa or sell memberships in one without a health spa operator's certificate of registration. Some organizations, such as tax-exempt nonprofits and member-owned clubs, are outside the definition.
How long do Texas gym members have to cancel a new contract?
Texas health spa contracts must include a notice that the member may cancel by midnight of the third business day after signing. Other states have their own rules, so check yours before writing your sign-up flow.
What should a gym or studio website include?
Class schedule, prices or at least a starting price, a free trial or intro offer with online booking, coach bios, and photos of the real space. Put the trial booking button at the top of every page.
Can automation reduce gym cancellations?
It can reduce the quiet ones. Flagging members whose visits drop, following up on failed payments and checking in after the first month all catch people before they decide to leave.
