Web Design for Houston Small Businesses
For Houston owners whose customers find them on a phone, often in Spanish, across a city of 640 square miles.
The customer is standing in your parking lot, looking you up. Your site takes long enough to load that they call the place next door.
This is not a customer-loyalty problem. It is a page-weight problem, and it is invisible from the office Wi-Fi where the site was approved.
What we would do first for a Houston business: load your homepage on a phone on mobile data, time the first screen, and check whether the phone number, hours and address are readable before anything else loads.
How Houstonians search
Houston covers 640.8 square miles of land, per the Census Bureau's 2024 Gazetteer, and has 2,387,910 residents in the 2024 American Community Survey. A customer in Alief is not driving to Kingwood for a tire patch. Searches carry a part of town, "dentist Gulfton", "AC repair Spring Branch", or rely on "near me", which means distance.
Language is the other half. The ACS social profile reports 47.8% of residents aged 5 and over speak a language other than English at home, and 22.9% speak English less than "very well". The language table shows Spanish at 37.7%, about 837,000 people.
Mobile is the whole site here
The ACS internet table shows 15.3% of Houston households have a smartphone and no other computing device, higher than New York's 11.0% or Chicago's 11.1% in the same survey, and only 92.0% have broadband of any kind in the ACS profile. For those customers there is no desktop version of your business.
Google's Core Web Vitals are the targets: main content within 2.5 seconds, a response to taps within 200 milliseconds, no layout jumping. We hand-code sites instead of using page builders or WordPress, which keeps pages small enough to hit those targets on mobile data.
Which Houston businesses most need a better site
The Census County Business Patterns 2023 counts 111,215 employer establishments in Harris County. Where a better site pays off first:
- Ambulatory health care, with 10,905 establishments, including 2,302 dental offices. Bilingual intake and insurance pages matter.
- Food service and drinking places, with 10,038 locations.
- Construction, with 7,718 establishments, including 4,728 specialty trade contractors such as electricians, plumbers and roofers.
- Automotive repair, with 2,133 shops, where "open now" and a map are most of the job.
- Oil and gas and mining, with 869 establishments employing 33,866 people. The small suppliers and service firms in that chain need sites that show certifications and capabilities, not stock photos of refineries.
ADA website accessibility
The DOJ's March 2022 web accessibility guidance says the ADA applies to goods and services businesses offer online, gives businesses flexibility in how they comply, and names WCAG as helpful guidance. The ACS profile reports 11.9% of Houstonians have a disability.
The 2024 DOJ Title II rule requires WCAG 2.1 Level AA of state and local governments, such as the City of Houston and Harris County. After an April 2026 interim final rule, large governments have until April 26, 2027. It does not cover private businesses. We build to WCAG basics anyway: contrast, alt text, labeled forms, keyboard access, and text instead of images of text.
Local SEO with a Google Business Profile
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. For a service-area business in Houston, set the profile's service area to the parts of town you truly cover, mirror that on a service-area page, and keep name, phone and hours identical in both places. If you serve customers in Spanish, say so on the profile and on the site.
A worked example
A Southwest Houston dental office, as an illustration. Assume 700 phone visits a month and 2% request an appointment today, so 14 requests. A Spanish appointment page, visible insurance list and a faster first screen raise that to an assumed 3.5%, about 25 requests. If 60% become new patients worth an assumed $300 in first-year visits, that is roughly 8 versus 15 patients, about $2,100 more a month. Test your own numbers before trusting ours.
| Today | After |
|---|---|
| First screen loads slowly on mobile data | Phone, hours and address visible fast |
| Insurance list in a PDF | Insurance list as text on the page |
| English only | Spanish appointment and services pages |
| Service area says "Greater Houston" | Named parts of town, matching Google |
Honest limits
If your Google profile has few reviews and the wrong category, fix that first. It is free and usually moves the needle faster than a new site.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business website cost in Houston?
Our published prices are $2,660 once plus $17.50 a month hosting, or $122.50 a month with hosting and unlimited edits. A two-page starter site is available for under $99.
Should my Houston business have a Spanish website?
If your customers speak Spanish, yes, starting with services and contact. Census data shows 37.7% of Houstonians aged 5 and over speak Spanish at home.
Why does my Houston business not show up on Google Maps?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. In a city this large, a searcher may simply be too far from your address, so a clear service area, matching website pages and reviews all help.
Does the ADA apply to a small business website in Texas?
The DOJ says the ADA applies to what businesses offer on the web and that businesses have flexibility in how they comply, with WCAG as helpful guidance. The strict WCAG 2.1 AA rule from 2024 is for governments.
