New York's business mix is small and specialized

The New York metro had 562,802 business establishments in 2023, and 88.2% of them had fewer than 20 employees, according to Census County Business Patterns 2023.

Several industries are far more concentrated here than elsewhere, by our own calculation from the Census metro and national files. There are 2,954 apparel and piece goods wholesalers (about 3.3 times the national share), 888 agents and managers for artists and entertainers (about 2.6 times), 5,059 dry cleaning and laundry businesses (about 2.6 times) and 1,513 performing arts companies. The metro also counts 16,236 lessors of real estate and 17,925 personal care businesses.

Those businesses share a pattern. Work arrives as documents and messages, and someone turns it into records by hand.

Today and after

New York rules that shape the build

NYC Local Law 144 bars employers and employment agencies from using an automated employment decision tool unless it had a bias audit within the past year, a summary of the audit is public, and candidates got the required notices. The city says that notice must come 10 business days before use.

The SHIELD Act requires any person or business that maintains private information to adopt administrative, technical and physical safeguards. Courts can impose up to $5,000 per violation for failing to keep reasonable safeguards. So our workflows limit who can see tenant, client and candidate data, and keep credentials out of shared documents.

For reminders sent with an AI-generated voice, the FCC's February 2024 ruling confirmed that the TCPA's prior express consent rule applies.

When it is not worth it yet

If your purchase orders arrive through EDI already, you do not need extraction for them. Automate the exceptions instead.

If you rent out fewer than ten units, a shared inbox and a spreadsheet may still be fine.
