Marketing and AI Automation for Independent Auto Repair Shops
For independent shops that compete with the dealer, spend the day on the phone getting repair approvals, and lose track of customers between oil changes.
The car is on the lift and the customer is not answering. The bay sits idle while your service writer calls a third time.
That is not a staff problem. It is an approval problem. Auto repair runs on a loop of inspect, estimate, get approval, do the work, and every stall in that loop is a lift that is not earning. A lot of the phone time goes to chasing a yes.
What we would do first
We would count how long vehicles wait between estimate and approval over a normal week. Then we would look at how many past customers came back for their next service without being reminded. Those two numbers decide whether the first project is digital approvals or reminders.
Your website: answer the dealer question
The biggest objection an independent shop hears is "won't this void my warranty?" Answer it before they ask.
The FTC's consumer page on auto warranties and service contracts says you do not have to use the dealer to keep a warranty in effect, and that "it's illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage because you had routine maintenance or repairs done by someone else." It also tells drivers to keep records of oil changes, tire rotations and brake pads. A shop that emails every customer a clean service record is helping them do exactly that.
- A page per service you want more of: brakes, diagnostics, A/C, transmission, with what affects the price.
- Makes and models you specialize in, stated plainly.
- Online booking with drop-off times, and whether you offer shuttle or loaner options.
- Your warranty on parts and labor.
We build sites by hand so they load fast on the phone of a driver stuck in a parking lot; see our web design approach.
Google Ads: cheaper leads than most local services
LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks put automotive repair, service and parts at $4.35 per click, a 15.51% conversion rate and $29.96 per lead, one of the lowest costs per lead of any industry in the report.
An illustration, not a forecast:
- $750 a month in ad spend, paid directly to Google.
- At $29.96 per lead, about 25 leads.
- If 15 come in for work at a $400 average repair order, that is $6,000 in repair orders.
- Our fee is a flat $300 a month, with no percentage of spend.
A 15% conversion rate is only useful if the calls reach someone. We check call recordings and missed calls against ad hours before raising any budget.
Auto shops have several categories on Google's US Local Services Ads list, including Auto Repair Shop, Brake Shop, Tire Shop, Transmission Shop and Oil Change Service. The same page notes that the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for auto categories, so your reviews and profile have to do that trust work instead. Google's LSA screening page also lists garage keepers liability insurance for auto repair. For Texas metros, see Google Ads management in Houston.
Automations that fit how a shop works
- Digital approval. The estimate with inspection photos goes to the customer by text; their approval is logged against the repair order with the time and the number it came from.
- Service reminders from mileage. The odometer reading at each visit sets the next reminder for oil, tires or brakes, instead of a generic six-month blast.
- Service history for the customer. After each visit, the customer gets a clean record of what was done, which also covers them for warranty purposes.
- Parts invoice extraction. Supplier invoices are read and matched to repair orders, so parts costs and returns do not get lost. See document data extraction.
Documentation is a legal requirement in some states. California's Bureau of Automotive Repair requires a written estimate before work and an authorization recorded on it. Oral authorization must be documented with the date, time, name of the person authorizing and the phone number called, and electronic authorization with the email or text number contacted. A workflow that records those fields every time is simpler than training people to remember them.
An illustration of the approval time, assumptions written out: 12 repair orders a day, 8 minutes of calling per approval, is about 1.6 hours a day of service-writer time, or roughly 400 hours a year across 250 working days.
Approval and reminder texts need consent under the TCPA. The FCC has ruled that AI-generated voices are "artificial" under that law, so AI calling needs prior consent as well.
| Today | After |
|---|---|
| Service writer calls until someone answers | Estimate and photos sent by text, approval logged |
| Reminders every six months for everyone | Reminders set from the car's mileage |
| Customers keep no records | Clean service history after every visit |
| Parts invoices typed in by hand | Invoices read and matched to repair orders |
Honest limits
If your bays are booked two weeks out, do not buy more leads. Fix approval time first, since it frees capacity you already have. And if your shop management system already has texting built in, use it. We only build what it does not do.
No lock-in
You own the Google Ads account, the site and the workflows. Management is month to month with 30 days' notice, and your technicians decide what the car needs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost for an auto repair shop?
LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks put automotive repair, service and parts at about $4.35 per click, a 15.51% conversion rate and $29.96 per lead. Those are national averages, so local competition and the services you advertise will move them.
Will customers void their warranty by using an independent shop?
The FTC's consumer guidance says you do not have to use the dealer to keep a warranty in effect, and that it is illegal for a dealer to deny coverage because routine maintenance or repairs were done by someone else. Put that on your site and link the FTC page.
Are auto repair shops eligible for Local Services Ads?
Yes. Auto repair shops, brake shops, tire shops, transmission shops and oil change services are all on Google's US list. Google notes that the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for auto categories.
Can I get repair approval by text message?
In California, the Bureau of Automotive Repair allows electronic authorization if it is documented with the date, time, the name of the person authorizing and the phone number or email contacted. Other states have their own rules, so check yours.
What should an auto shop automate first?
Digital approvals and service reminders. Sending the estimate with photos by text, logging the approval, and reminding customers when the next service is due takes over the calls that happen for every single repair order.
