Websites, Google Ads and Automation for Small E-commerce Stores
For independent online stores doing their own customer service, shipping updates and product feeds, usually after the day job.
A customer emails asking where their order is.
It is the fourth "where is my order" email today, and the answer is in a tracking page they could have seen themselves.
That is not a customer problem, and you are not bad at service. It is a notification problem: the carrier knows, your store knows, and nothing tells the customer until they ask.
What we would do first
We would look at your last month of support email and sort it into buckets. Order status, returns and sizing questions are the usual suspects. Then we check that your delayed-shipment process meets the FTC rule, because that is the one with legal teeth.
The rules that apply to an online store
Shipping times. The FTC's Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule says you must have a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, or for shipping within 30 days if you state none. If you learn you cannot ship in time, you must seek the customer's consent to the delay, and if you do not get it, refund promptly without being asked. A preorder or backorder flow that emails customers automatically is the practical way to comply.
Privacy. The California Privacy Protection Agency's FAQ says the CCPA applies to for-profit businesses doing business in California that have annual revenue of $26.625 million or more (effective January 1, 2025), or buy, sell or share the personal information of 100,000 or more California residents or households, or get 50% or more of annual revenue from selling or sharing it. A small store can cross the second line through ad pixels and data sharing before it crosses the first, so we map which tags share what.
Reviews. The FTC's consumer reviews and testimonials rule Q&A says incentives for reviews are allowed, but not if they are conditioned on the review expressing a particular sentiment, and review suppression is prohibited. Our review-request emails ask for honest reviews, and every rating is displayed.
Your storefront
- Product pages that load fast on a phone, with real photos, sizes and stock status.
- Shipping times and return rules stated on the product page, not only in the footer.
- A tracking page linked from every order email.
- Structured product data, so Google Shopping and search can read price and availability.
We hand-code storefronts or tune the platform you already use, whichever is cheaper for you to run.
Google Ads: Shopping first, then Search
The LocaliQ 2026 search advertising benchmarks measure search ads, so treat them as a rough guide for a store. Shopping, Collectibles and Gifts averages $4.14 per click, an 8.28% click-through rate and a 4.01% conversion rate. Apparel, Fashion and Jewelry averages $4.44 per click and 4.50%.
An illustration of why margin decides everything, using the Shopping and Gifts averages plus one assumption:
| Step | Illustration |
|---|---|
| Monthly ad spend | $2,000 |
| Clicks at $4.14 | about 483 |
| Orders at a 4.01% conversion rate | about 19 |
| Assumed gross profit per order | $60 |
| Gross profit from ads | about $1,160 |
At those numbers the campaign loses money. Double the profit per order, or lift conversion with a better product page, and it pays. That is why we start with your best-margin products, not the whole catalog. We manage Search, Shopping and Performance Max for a flat $300 a month, with spend billed by Google to you and the account in your name. See Google Ads management.
Five automations for how a store runs
- Proactive shipping updates. Carrier events trigger customer emails, including delay notices with a consent-or-refund choice when a promised date slips.
- Support assistant grounded in your policies. Answers order status, sizing and return questions from your own help pages and order data, and hands everything else to you. See AI chatbots and knowledge assistants.
- Returns intake. A form captures order number, reason and photos, issues a label, and logs the reason so you can see which products come back.
- Supplier invoice and packing-list capture. Incoming stock is read from supplier documents and checked against the purchase order before it is added to inventory. See document data extraction.
- Product feed checks. A daily check flags products with missing images, wrong prices or out-of-stock items still advertised.
Hours before software
An illustration: 1 owner × 90 minutes a day on status, return and sizing emails × 365 days × $30 an hour ≈ $16,400 a year. Automating two-thirds of those emails returns about 365 hours.
| Today | After |
|---|---|
| Customers ask where their order is | They are told before they ask |
| Delays handled case by case | Consent-or-refund notice sent automatically |
| Returns arrive by email in any format | One form, a label and a logged reason |
| Ads run on the whole catalog | Budget goes to products that make money |
Honest limits
If you get fewer than 100 orders a month, a support assistant is premature; better order emails and a good FAQ page will do most of the work. And if your margins are thin, fix pricing or product pages before buying clicks.
You own the store code, the ad account and the automations. We work with stores remotely, including sellers in New York.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a small online store spend on Google Ads?
Start from margin, not from a benchmark. LocaliQ's 2026 search benchmarks put Shopping, Collectibles and Gifts at $4.14 per click with a 4.01% conversion rate, so at those averages you pay roughly $100 in clicks per sale, which only works if your gross profit per order is well above that.
Does the CCPA apply to my small Shopify store?
Often not, but check the thresholds. The California Privacy Protection Agency says the CCPA applies to for-profit businesses doing business in California with annual revenue of $26.625 million or more, or that buy, sell or share personal information of 100,000 or more California residents or households, or that get half or more of revenue from selling or sharing it.
What happens if I cannot ship an order on time?
Under the FTC's Mail Order Rule, if you learn you cannot ship within the time you stated, or within 30 days if you stated no time, you must seek the customer's consent to the delay, and refund promptly if you cannot get it.
Can I offer a discount in exchange for a review?
You can offer an incentive for honest reviews, but the FTC says you cannot condition it on the review expressing a particular sentiment, such as five stars, and the incentive should be disclosed.
Do I need Google Shopping ads or Search ads?
Many product stores start with Shopping, because the ad shows the product, price and image. Search ads work well for brand terms and for products people search by problem rather than by name.
