Marketing and AI Automation for Plumbing Companies

For plumbing owners who win emergency calls on the phone and lose them after hours, in the ad account and in the paperwork.

The phone rings at 11 p.m. with water coming through a ceiling. Your ad stopped running at 6, and the voicemail is full.

That is not a staffing problem. It is a handoff problem. The call, the ad schedule, the on-call rotation and the dispatch board each work on their own, and the customer falls through the gap between them. Plumbing is the trade where that gap costs the most, because a burst pipe does not wait until morning and the next plumber on the page will answer.

What we would do first

We would pull thirty days of your call log and your Google Ads search terms and line them up by hour. We are looking for one pattern: ad spend concentrated in office hours while emergency searches and missed calls happen at night. If it is there, fixing that alignment comes before any new campaign.

Your website: built for the emergency visitor

Someone searching "water heater leaking" at night is on a phone, stressed, and deciding in seconds. The site has to answer three questions above the fold: are you open now, do you serve my area, and how do I reach a person.

That last point is not decoration. In Texas, 22 Tex. Admin. Code § 367.10 requires that advertisements soliciting plumbing work state the license number of the responsible master plumber of record, regardless of the type of media. The listed exceptions cover things like radio spots, uniforms and third-party directory listings you do not control. Your own website and your ad copy are not on that list. We build sites by hand, without page builders, so they load fast on a phone; see our web design approach.

Plumbing is expensive to advertise. LocaliQ's 2025 Search Ad Benchmarks for Home Services, drawn from 3,211 US campaigns between April 2024 and March 2025, put plumbing at $10.49 per click, a 7.63% conversion rate and $129.02 per lead.

Here is what that means at a modest budget. This is an illustration, not a forecast:

  1. $1,500 a month in ad spend, paid by you directly to Google.
  2. At the $129.02 benchmark, that buys about 11 to 12 leads.
  3. If you book half of them, that is 5 or 6 jobs.
  4. Our fee is a flat $300 a month on top, with no percentage of spend.

Whether that pays depends on your average ticket, which only you know. A drain clear and a water heater replacement are very different jobs, so we build separate campaigns and bid for the expensive work harder.

Local Services Ads

Plumbers are on Google's list of Local Services Ads categories, where you pay per lead rather than per click. For plumbing, Google's screening requirements go further than for most trades: plumbers, electricians and HVAC companies undergo service professional background checks on the people who go into homes. Plan for that paperwork before you plan the budget.

Automations that fit how plumbing works

  1. After-hours intake. A missed call triggers a text back within a minute, asks what is leaking and where, and pages the on-call plumber if it is an emergency. Routine requests land in the morning queue.
  2. Job photos to estimate. The tech photographs the water heater label; the model and size are read from the photo and dropped into the quote template, so nobody retypes serial numbers.
  3. Warranty and install records. Each install is filed with its date, model and address, so a callback three years later starts with the facts.
  4. Review request after payment. When an invoice is marked paid, every customer gets the same polite review request. Asking only the happy ones is a practice the FTC says could violate the FTC Act.

An illustration of the intake alone, with the assumptions written out: 6 missed after-hours calls a week, one in three becoming a job if answered, and a $350 average ticket is roughly 2 jobs and $700 a week that currently go to a competitor. Change the numbers to yours.

If any of this uses an AI voice to call customers back, the FCC has confirmed that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" under the TCPA, which means prior consent is required. Texting back someone who just called you is a different situation from cold outreach, but we set consent rules up with you, not around you.

Honest limits

If you are a one-truck shop already booked three weeks out, do not buy more leads. Fix the after-hours handoff and raise your prices first. And if your call volume at night is only one or two a week, a forwarding rule to your cell may be all you need.

No lock-in

The Google Ads account is in your name, the website code is yours, and the workflows run in accounts you own. Management is month to month with 30 days' notice. A person on your team still decides which emergencies to take.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Google Ads cost for a plumber?

LocaliQ's 2025 home services benchmarks put plumbing at an average of $10.49 per click and $129.02 per lead. Your own numbers depend on the city and your service area, and our management fee is a flat $300 a month on top of the ad spend you pay Google directly.

Should a plumber use Local Services Ads or regular Google Ads?

Usually both. Local Services Ads charge per lead and show the Google Verified badge, while Search campaigns let you choose keywords, hours and landing pages. We decide the split by looking at which one brings booked jobs, not just calls.

Does my plumbing license number need to be on my website?

In Texas, yes. The plumbing board's rule on displaying the responsible master plumber's name and license number covers advertising in any media, with narrow exceptions such as radio. Other states have their own rules, so check with your state board.

Can an AI assistant answer my emergency line at night?

It can take the details, text the customer back and page your on-call plumber. It should not quote prices or promise arrival times you have not set. If it uses an AI voice to call people, federal TCPA consent rules apply.

How long does it take to set up after-hours call handling?

A basic version that captures the caller, sorts emergency from routine and pages the on-call tech is usually a small, fixed-scope project. We show it working in a test setup before it touches your real phone line.
