Marketing and AI Automation for Veterinary Clinics

For veterinary practices whose phones never stop, whose reminders decide next year's revenue, and whose record rules come from state law rather than HIPAA.

The phone rings 80 times before lunch. Half the calls are "is my dog due for shots?" and "can you send her records to the groomer?"

That is not a front-desk problem. It is a records and reminders problem. Veterinary clinics answer the same questions all day because the answers live in the practice software and not anywhere a client can see. Every one of those calls is a technician or receptionist not helping the pet in front of them.

What we would do first

We would log a normal day of phone calls by reason. Then we would check how many active patients are overdue for a vaccine or wellness visit. Those two lists usually point at the same fix.

Your website: answer the call before it happens

Pet owners search for a vet when something is wrong or when a new pet arrives. The site should handle both.

The records form matters because of how veterinary privacy works. HIPAA's definitions in 45 CFR § 160.103 are about health information on individuals, meaning people, so pet records are governed by state law. In Texas, Occupations Code § 801.353 says a veterinarian may not be required to release information about an animal's care except with the client's written authorization or an appropriate court order, with exceptions such as rabies vaccination verification. A form that captures that authorization turns a phone call into a filed request. We build sites by hand so forms like this are simple and fast; see our web design approach.

LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks put Animals and Pets at $4.06 per click, a 16.22% conversion rate and $31.50 per lead, among the lowest costs per lead of any industry in the report. That category also includes boarding and grooming, so treat it as a rough guide.

An illustration, not a forecast:

  1. $600 a month in ad spend, paid directly to Google.
  2. At $31.50 per lead, about 19 inquiries.
  3. If 12 become new clients, each cost about $50 in ad spend.
  4. Our fee is a flat $300 a month on top.

A new client with a puppy or kitten brings years of wellness visits, so we separate new-pet campaigns from general "vet near me" searches and bid more for the first.

Veterinarian is on Google's US Local Services Ads list. The same page notes that booking leads are not available for health care categories, and Google's screening requirements list professional liability insurance for veterinarians. Automations that fit how a veterinary clinic works

  1. Vaccine and wellness reminders. Each pet's due dates come from its record, and owners get a reminder with a booking link. The Texas Department of State Health Services says dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age by a licensed veterinarian, and local jurisdictions may require more frequent boosters, so reminder rules should follow your county.
  2. Records requests. The authorization form files the request, attaches the right records and sends them to the groomer, boarder or specialist, with a log of what was sent.
  3. Vaccine certificates on demand. Owners can get a current rabies certificate by text or email without calling the front desk.
  4. Post-visit follow-up. After surgery or a dental cleaning, owners get care instructions and a check-in the next day, and replies that mention a problem go straight to a technician.

An illustration of the phone time, assumptions written out: 40 calls a day about due dates, records and certificates, 4 minutes each, is about 2.7 hours a day, or roughly 670 hours a year over 250 working days, at the BLS median of $18.27 an hour for receptionists is about $12,200.

Reminder texts need the client's consent under the TCPA. If an AI voice ever calls clients, the FCC has confirmed that AI-generated voices are "artificial" under that law.

Honest limits

If your practice software already sends reminders you are happy with, do not rebuild them. Start with records requests. If you are booked solid for weeks, pause new-client ads and use the capacity reminders free up for existing patients.

No lock-in

You own the ad account, the site and the workflows. Management is month to month with 30 days' notice, and medical decisions stay with your veterinarians.

Frequently asked questions

Does HIPAA apply to veterinary clinics?

Generally no, because HIPAA covers identifiable health information about people. Veterinary records are governed by state law. In Texas, Occupations Code 801.353 says a veterinarian may not be required to release information about an animal's care without the client's written authorization or a court order, with some exceptions such as rabies verification.

How much does Google Ads cost for a veterinary clinic?

LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks put Animals and Pets at $4.06 per click, a 16.22% conversion rate and $31.50 per lead. Clinics, boarding and grooming are all in that category, so your own numbers will differ.

Can vets use Google Local Services Ads?

Yes. Veterinarian is on Google's US Local Services Ads list, alongside pet boarding, grooming and training. Booking leads are not available for health care categories, so leads arrive as calls and messages.

What should a veterinary clinic automate first?

Vaccine and wellness reminders tied to each pet's record. Texas requires rabies vaccination by 4 months of age with boosters after that, and local rules can be stricter, so reminders both fill the schedule and help owners stay compliant.
